The 2013 World Food & Music Festival will take place Friday through Sunday, Sept. 20-22 in the East Village in downtown Des Moines. Now in its ninth year, the World Food & Music Festival has grown steadily as Iowa’s top celebration of diverse food traditions and rich cultural network.  The event is free to the public, with reasonably-priced food options for all to enjoy.  More than 75,000 attend the event annually, to enjoy international flavors, free live cultural entertainment, on-site cultural cooking demonstrations by local chefs and much more.  Sponsorships and merchant/commercial vendor opportunities are still available.  Please contact Amy Yost at the Downtown Community Alliance, 515-286-4906 or ayost@downtowndesmoines.com for additional information.

The woman who as a child was the basis for the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is gravely ill. It was thought by many at the time that the psychedelic song from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band was a paean to LSD because of the initials in the title, but it was actually based on a drawing that John Lennon's young son Julian brought home from school. He told his father the drawing was of Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Lucy Vodden, now living in Surrey just outside of London _ drifted apart after schoolyard days, but they have gotten back in touch as Lennon has tried to help Vodden cope with Lupus, a life-threatening disease.
